JAMMU, August 17, 2025 – The Directorate of School Education, Jammu, has ordered the closure of all government and private schools across the Jammu Division on Monday, August 18, 2025, in response to persistent heavy rainfall and deteriorating weather conditions. The decision, announced through an official directive, aims to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and staff amid forecasts of continued downpours and potential risks of flash floods and landslides.

The official order stated, “In view of the inclement and bad weather conditions, it is hereby ordered that all Government as well as Private Schools of Jammu Division shall remain closed for tomorrow, i.e., 18.08.2025.” This precautionary measure follows a series of devastating weather events in the region, including cloudbursts and flash floods that have claimed over 60 lives and injured more than 120 people in recent days.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather advisory predicting heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across several districts in Jammu and Kashmir, including Jammu, Reasi, Udhampur, Rajouri, Poonch, Samba, Kathua, Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban, from August 17 to 19. The advisory warns of potential cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides in vulnerable areas, prompting authorities to take proactive measures to safeguard lives.

Recent cloudburst incidents in Kishtwar and Kathua have heightened concerns. On August 14, a cloudburst in Chisoti village, Kishtwar, triggered flash floods that resulted in 61 deaths and left 82 people missing. Similarly, on August 17, Kathua’s Jodh Ghati and Janglote areas were hit by cloudbursts and landslides, claiming seven lives and injuring several others.

Jammu and Kashmir administration, along with disaster management teams, is on high alert, closely monitoring the situation. The District Magistrate of Rajouri has issued a public advisory urging residents to avoid rivers, streams, and landslide-prone areas and to keep children indoors. Rescue operations involving the Indian Army, J&K Police, CISF, CRPF, BRO, and NHPC are ongoing in affected areas to locate missing individuals and provide relief.

The Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) has also postponed the bi-annual examinations for Classes 10th and 11th scheduled for August 18, with new dates to be announced later. Authorities have emphasized that these measures prioritize public safety amid the region’s extreme weather challenges.
