Bihar Elections 2025: May have to wait for seat distribution in India Block, Lalu and Tejashwi leave for Delhi
The seat-sharing crisis may haunt the Indian faction in Bihar for some time, with RJD president Lalu Prasad, along with son and successor Tejashwi Yadav, leaving for Delhi on Sunday (October 12).

The party, which recently “authorized” Prasad to decide on seat distribution and candidate selection, has a formidable presence in the “Mahagathbandhan”, the name by which the RJD, Congress and Left alliance was known in Bihar until a nationwide alliance was formed with the catchy acronym.

When the father-son duo, accompanied by Prasad’s wife and former chief minister Rabri Devi, came out of their residence, there were cries of disappointment on the faces of the candidates who were expecting a meeting with their patrons.

The security personnel had to struggle a lot to chase them away from bungalow 10, Circular Road, allotted to Rabri Devi, just in front of the Chief Minister’s residence.

At the airport, the elderly couple did not take any questions from reporters, but Tejashwi Yadav, who is now eyeing the seat of power long held by his parents, said “all is fine”.

There was speculation that the RJD’s “first family” had stormed the national capital to seek the intervention of Congress’ de facto leader Rahul Gandhi, who is said to have angered the state’s big ally with his aggression.

Reports from a section of the media suggest that the grand old party believes that after the success of the ‘Voters Adhikar Yatra’, it is no longer an expendable force in the state, and wants to contest almost the same number of seats as it did five years ago, when it fielded 70 candidates, of whom only 19 could win.

However, a close aide of the RJD chief, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “Lalu ji and Tejashwi ji have left for Delhi as tomorrow is the hearing date of the land scam. Of course, while in the national capital, a meeting with senior leaders cannot be ruled out.”

The scam pertains to alleged irregularities in Prasad’s tenure as Railway Minister in the Congress-led UPA government.

The source also claimed, “Our mind is made up. We will keep at least half of the 243 seats for ourselves. Compared to 2020, when we contested more than 140 seats, this is still somewhat of a sacrifice to accommodate new allies.”

“It is not just for the Congress but for all small parties to realize that growing ambitions need to be kept under control. Only then can a credible challenge be presented to the ruling NDA,” he said.

The filing of nomination papers for the first phase will end on October 17, with voting for 121 seats taking place on November 6.
