The historic three-day Sankri Devta Mela in Panchari, Udhampur, concluded with great enthusiasm, drawing thousands of devotees to the sacred Sankri Devta Temple in village Meer. On the final day, senior officials, including the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Udhampur, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Saloni Rai, and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Benam Tosh, attended the closing ceremony, adding to the event’s significance. Their presence highlighted the importance of this cultural and religious festival in Jammu and Kashmir.

Sankri Devta Mela, held annually in the scenic village of Meer, Panchari, is a cherished tradition that celebrates the region’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage. The temple, believed to be over 500 years old, is dedicated to deities associated with Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakti. This year’s mela, which took place from August 19 to August 21, 2025, saw over 90,000 visitors from across J&K and beyond, coming together to seek blessings and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

Concluding day was marked by vibrant rituals, including the ceremonial Pooja/Jaatar, where sacred items like Trishul, Gungraal, and other vaans were taken to the shrine to invoke divine blessings. The event was filled with folk songs, traditional Kud dances, and cultural performances by local artists and students, showcasing the Dogra culture of Jammu.

The presence of DIG Udhampur, DC Saloni Rai, and SSP Benam Tosh at the mela’s conclusion underscored the administration’s commitment to promoting cultural unity and ensuring the event’s success. DC Saloni Rai, speaking at the event, praised the mela for fostering brotherhood, peace, and prosperity while preserving J&K’s traditional values. SSP Benam Tosh, along with the district police, ensured robust security arrangements, including a Police Control Room, to keep devotees safe.

District Administration of Udhampur made elaborate arrangements for the mela, providing uninterrupted power, safe drinking water, sanitation facilities, medical assistance, and transport services. Stalls set up by various government departments informed visitors about state and central schemes, boosting awareness about rural development initiatives.

Sankri Devta Mela is more than just a religious event—it’s a celebration of community and culture. Held in the picturesque village of Meer, surrounded by lush forests and towering mountains, the mela attracts tourists and pilgrims alike, boosting local tourism and the economy. Events like wrestling competitions, rural sports such as Kabbadi and Tug of War, and cultural programs organized by the Youth Services and Sports Department added to the festive spirit, giving local talent a platform to shine.
