Diwali 2025: School holidays announced across India; Full list here
Diwali will be celebrated with an extended five-day holiday in schools across India, starting on Dhanteras (October 18) and ending on Bhai Dooj (October 23).
In Rajasthan, the lockdown will start from October 13 itself. Bihar is extending its holidays to include Chhath Puja preparations, while Uttar Pradesh is also taking Diwali holidays.
Meanwhile, Karnataka has closed its schools till October 18 to conduct caste survey across the state.
Schools in most states including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and others will remain closed for Diwali from October 20 to October 23.
Major holidays such as Dhanteras, Chhoti Diwali, the main Diwali day, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj are all covered over the scheduled five-day break.
Parents and children are advised to confirm the exact dates with the school administration, as the exact holiday schedule may sometimes change depending on state instructions or the calendar of the particular school.
Rajasthan
Diwali holidays in Rajasthan started from 13 October. According to the notification of the Education Department, schools will remain closed from October 13 to October 24, giving teachers and students a 12-day leave.
Bihar
Schools in Bihar will be closed on 18 October. Apart from being closed for Diwali, schools will also remain closed before Chhath Puja, making the holidays last for several days.
Uttar Pradesh
According to Uttar Pradesh Education Department, schools will remain closed from October 20 to October 23 for Diwali. Due to October 19 being Sunday, students have five days holiday.
west bengal
Heavy rains and landslides led to closure of schools in West Bengal, especially in Darjeeling and Kalimpong areas. Schools are expected to reopen on October 13 after a precautionary closure. Schools will remain closed on the occasion of Kali Puja, Diwali, followed by Bhai Dooj and Chhath Puja, with widespread holidays across the state.
Karnataka
Schools in Karnataka will remain closed from October 8 to October 18 due to the government’s state-wide caste-based socio-educational survey.
