‘Heaven for all types of people’: SC expresses concern over illegal foreigners in India
Hearing the case of an Israeli national, Drear Shalom Goldstein, who was living in Goa with his Russian partner and his two minor daughters, the apex court said: “The country has become a safe shelter where anyone can come and live”.
Goldstein filed a petition to prevent his children from deportation of Russia, but the court dismissed the petition, called it ‘completely trivial’, saying that “the petitioner approached the High Court and the court only for campaigning.”
Justice Surya Kant and Joylya Bagchi questioned the presence of Goldstein in India and asked, “Why are you in India despite being an Israeli? What is the source of your livelihood?” Justice Kant also demanded the official evidence of his upbringing, asking, “Who are you? What is your right? Please show us any official documents that declares you as the father of minors.”
“What were you doing in Goa? Do you have a valid document to live in this country? You went to Nepal and enhanced your visa, and then went to Goa,” he asked further.
“What were you doing when your children were living in a cave?” Asked Justice Bagchi.
Goldstein’s lawyer, Deepak Prakash, asked the court to verify for more time whether the children were already sent back and a copy of the petition at the center to serve a copy. However, the Supreme Court refused to postpone the case and allowed Goldstein to withdraw its petition.
