ICU caught fire at Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Jaipur, 8 patients killed
At least eight patients were killed at Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Jaipur after a fire at the ICU late on Sunday (5 October).

The ICU caught fire on the second floor of the Trauma Center Building. At that time, 11 patients were admitted to the ICU, and six of them were killed and four men – in -charge of the trauma center, Dr. Anurag Dhakad said. News18 Hindi said that later two more patients died, the total death was reduced to eight.

Fire in Jaipur Hospital: Anurag Dhakad, in charge of SMS Hospital Trauma Center, says, “We had 24 patients in two ICUs on the second floor – 11 in ICU and 13 in the other. Eleven patients were transferred, and we had tried hard to save the lives of six patients, but they were already serious.

A short circuit was the primary cause of fire.

Minister of State for Rajasthan (MOS) for Jawahar Singh Bedam of Ghar, who visited the hospital today, said, “It seems that this happened due to a short circuit in the ICU. The rescue operation was carried out.”

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma also visited the hospital.

He has ordered an inquiry into the incident. A committee has been announced for investigation. The committee will be chaired by Iqbal Khan, Commissioner, Department of Medical Education.

The committee will examine the causes of the fire, the reaction of the hospital management for the fire, the fire fighting system in the trauma center and the SMS hospital, the safety and withdrawal of patients in the event of fire, and in future such fire will examine measures to protect the hospital and prevent recurrence and submit a report.

Rajasthan DGP Rajiv Kumar Sharma told the media, “We have asked the Jaipur Police Commissioner to find the root cause of the incident. We will also take help of the teams of FSL and Fire Department. We will also check the preventive measures that can be done to ensure that there are no such incidents in the future.”

Relatives of the victims protested outside the hospital alleging negligence by employees.

One of the relatives of the victims, Sanjay Singh said, “Someone should come and meet us. We are sitting on a dharna. We want justice.”

Another relative, who had lost his family member in the incident, said, “It was my aunt’s son. He was 25 years old and Pintu’s name. When the smoke came out at 11:20 pm, we informed the doctors that the patients could have problems. Then the smoke increased.
