Rajasthan FDA did not find any trace of DEG in cough medicine
Sources said CDSCO has found that the deaths in the state were not due to cough syrup but due to Acute Respiratory Disorders and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES).
There have been four deaths so far in the state.
The government had claimed that the syrup alleged to be causing the illness and deaths had been found safe in laboratory tests.
On October 4, Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar said that there was no adulteration or defect in the medicine.
The minister had claimed, “We got the drug tested twice. First our drug controller tested it and then RMSCL (Rajasthan Medical Services Corporation Limited) tested it. In both the test reports it was found to be not defective.”
Khimsar has claimed that the deceased children were suffering from other diseases and the cough syrup was given to them by the parents of their own free will and not prescribed by the doctors.
On giving clean chit to the drug supplying company Cassons Pharma, Khimsar had said that the report was given after coming clean.
DEG is an industrial solvent – colourless, odorless and deceptively sweet tasting. It is used in brake fluids, paints, and lubricants, and is safe only in controlled industrial use. But if it contaminates other consumables, for example – pharmaceutical-grade ingredients, even in small amounts, it becomes fatal – causing kidney, liver and nervous system damage.
