The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed all the states and center areas to frame road safety rules within six months by regulating the movement of non-motor-powered vehicles and pedestrians in public places.

A bench of Justices JB Pardwala and KV Vishwanathan directed all states and UT to frame such rules under Section 138 (1A) and 210D of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

“We direct all states and UT to make rules under Section 138 (1A) of the motor vehicle, if not already implicated, not already implicated, with the aim of regulating activities and transporting non-mechanical propelled vehicles and pedestrians to public places and national highways.

The bench said, “We direct all states and UT to prepare the rules under Section 210D of the Act within a period of six months, if already not designed for designs, construction and maintenance of roads other than national highways other than national highways,” said the bench.

The instruction came on a petition filed by Coimbatore -based surgeon S Rajsekaran, who had highlighted a large number of road accidents in India.
